Start with Why

Simon Sinek tells us to start with why and so I shall.

Blog header - Start With Why

Here is my why:

  • I provide an outside perspective on the way people work together in change roles and in doing so help people, teams and organisations understand and improve how they affect change.

This makes things better for everyone:

  • the people working on and responsible for the change all other stakeholders the end users or the service or product

“Better” means that the change:

  • meets the needs of the people who will be affected by it provides the planned benefits probably adds value in ways we could not anticipate at the outset as we learn does no harm
  • I do this because I enjoy working with people in this way and to keep myself and Roxy in the manner to which we have become accustomed.
  • With thanks to Polly Thompson, Lisa Jeffery, Gary Austin, Beth Fox and Russell Garner for feedback on an earlier version of this

What is your why?

Notes

  • Some of my thinking while writing this:
  • Why does change often fail to deliver the promised benefits? Why does it mostly take longer and cost more than planned? Why do the lessons learned from previous projects not make a difference?
  • I believe that change works best when we involve the right people, with the right knowledge and when we understand the outcome we want to produce or the problem we are tying to solve before we decide on a solution and plan what to do.
  • All too often as change makers we are told what to do, how to do it and given a short time scale, little resource (money) and not enough people. It sets us all up to fail.
  • I have seen the results of taking a different approach and the positive effect it has on the people making the change.
